  • Upon submission of assignments or when a grade is finalized, student grades will automatically pass back and appear in the Grades section of Canvas.

  • We sync grades as soon as a student submits an assignment or when a grade is finalized, but if anything looks off, teachers can manually push grades to Canvas.

If an assignment is set to Teacher Graded, we will not send a score until the grade is finalized (Teal Color).

Reporting Scores for a Single Assignment

  • A teacher can report scores for a specific assignment by going to the Gradebook app, clicking on a specific assignment, and clicking Report Scores to Canvas. Full instructions here.

πŸ’‘ This operation can take over an hour to complete depending on the number of students and grades being passed back. We recommend starting with the Single Assignment.

  • Go to the Gradebook app > click Export > then select Push All Grades to Canvas.

πŸ’‘ The instructions below will only work for some teachers and will depend on how Canvas is set up on your end. District privacy settings might block CodeHS from being able to remove assignments from the Canvas gradebook. If that is the case, the below instructions will not work, and you will need to remove assignments separately from the CodeHS Gradebook and the Canvas gradebook. Please reach out for additional information.

  • Some teachers do not want to include specific types of assignments in their Gradebook for a few reasons: you watch videos as a class, students are not completing any work in the examples and badges, etc.

  • If you would like grades for a specific assignment type to not be passed back from CodeHS to Canvas (such as videos, examples, or badges), go to the Gradebook app > click the Settings tab > and uncheck any boxes for any assignment types that you would not like to include in your Gradebook:

Screenshot showing the settings tool in the Gradebook app. We can then select what to include in Gradebook such as quizzes and challenges under the Include in Gradebook section.
  • Then, from your Gradebook, click Export > then Push All Grades to Canvas. This could take about an hour to complete:

  • Make sure to make the change and follow these steps for each of your sections!

Due Date Passback

Due Date Passback is available for the Modules Only or Lessons Only content types.

If Modules Only or Lessons Only is the selected content type when the common cartridge is exported, Due Date Grade Passback is enabled by default. This means that if a due date is set for a Module or Lesson, grades will only be sent after the due date has passed.

Example: If you have Modules Only selected, and Module 1 assigned in CodeHS with a due date set:

  • Before the due date, students will not see a score:Screenshot of the canvas gradebook showing no grade for a gradebook column

  • After the due date, the grade will update based on completed activities:

If Modules Only or Lessons Only was the selected Content Type when the common cartridge is exported with Due Date Grade Passback disabled, students will receive a grade in Canvas immediately upon completing an activity.

  • Upon Student Submission, students will receive a partial score:

Disabling Due Date Passback

You can turn off Due Date Passback by Navigating to Section Settings and disabling the Due Date Based Grade Passback toggle.
