NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) has confirmed that schools can continue to purchase and use CodeHS during the 2026–27 school year. We've worked directly with NYCPS to ensure our AI settings align with district guidance.
As part of this, all student-facing AI tools and AI Grading have been disabled across NYCPS schools, while certain teacher-facing AI tools remain available. Some courses that use external AI tools are also restricted.
Here's what teachers and school administrators need to know.
Why some AI tools are turned off
In September 2026, NYCPS announced new restrictions on generative AI in schools. CodeHS worked with the district to review our AI tools and update their availability across NYCPS schools.
These restrictions only affect certain AI features. Teachers and students can continue using the CodeHS curriculum, coding environment, assignments, and standard grading tools as usual.
What's on and off for NYC public schools
On (teacher-only, students never see these): AI Creator, Ask AI and AI Teacher Hints, and Teacher Vibe Coding.
Off: all student-facing AI, including Smart Hints and student Vibe Coding.
Off: AI Grading (AI grade suggestions), following NYCPS guidance.
You can still teach your CodeHS courses as usual. The curriculum, code editor, standard grading tools, reports, and classes are all available. AI features are optional and aren't required to use CodeHS.
Some courses that use or reference external AI tools are restricted for NYCPS schools. See the FAQs below for more details.
Frequently asked questions
Can my school turn disabled AI tools back on?
No. These tools are disabled centrally for NYCPS schools, so individual teachers and school administrators can't turn them back on. If NYCPS changes its guidance, we'll review the settings and update this article as needed.
Can I use CodeHS AI courses?
Teachers can use courses that teach AI concepts without requiring students to use AI tools. For example, Advanced Python and AI Programming teaches AI concepts without requiring AI tools, so it remains available.
Courses that use or reference external AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are blocked by CodeHS for NYCPS teachers. These courses will still appear in the course catalog, but teachers cannot add them, assign them, or create sections using them. This applies to all NYCPS teachers, whether they're using CodeHS Free or Pro.
Student-facing CodeHS AI tools, including Vibe Coding, are also disabled for NYCPS schools.
See Choosing the Right AI Course for more information about which courses use AI tools.
Does this apply to NYC charter schools?
No. These settings are intended for NYCPS-managed school organizations; charter school configurations depend on the setup of each Charter Network. Contact support@codehs.com to confirm your organization's settings.
My school needs written confirmation for central approval. Can CodeHS provide it?
Yes. Please contact hello@codehs.com if you need written confirmation of your school's AI settings. Our team can help with documentation.
I'm seeing an AI tool that should be off, or a teacher tool that's missing.
Please reach out to CodeHS Support at support@codehs.com or using the help button in your account. We can take a look at your school's settings and help figure out what's going on.
Does this affect teachers using the free version of CodeHS?
While CodeHS AI features are only available through CodeHS Pro, NYCPS restrictions also affect which courses Free teachers can use.
Courses that use or reference external AI tools are blocked by CodeHS for all NYCPS teachers, regardless of whether they use Free or Pro. These courses remain visible in the catalog, but teachers cannot add them, assign them, or create sections using them.
All other courses and features available with your plan remain accessible.
