District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class. Overview
When you are reviewing student code, you can generate AI Teacher Hints that point out where the student can improve their program and send the hint as a message to the student.
AI Teacher Hints is powered by AI to efficiently analyze a student's code, pinpoint where problems are, and draft feedback that speaks to their specific program. This helps reduce the time you spend reviewing every line of code in every program, allowing you to focus on giving more students personalized and specific support.
AI Teacher Hints is designed to give you control of every hint. Only teachers can generate them, they provide guidance instead of answers, you can edit the hint draft before it goes out, and nothing is shared with a student unless you choose to send it.

Students do not have the ability to generate AI Teacher Hints or feedback for themselves. If you would like your students to have access to generate code hints, check out the Smart Hints article.
AI Teacher Hints can be accessed directly within the Code Editor via the Conversation Tool.
Using AI Teacher Hints in the Code Editor
When viewing a student's code in the editor, click More > Conversation.
Select the arrow on the right of the blue Generate AI Hint button to choose the type of hint you'd like to create: General Hint, Identify Problem, or Identify Problem and Offer Solution.
Click the Generate AI Hint button to create a draft of the hint text. If you didn't choose a hint type, a General Hint will be generated.
Edit the message.
Once you are happy with the text, click Send to share the hint with the student. These hints will not be shared with students unless the Send button is clicked.
Optional: Give feedback on the hint that was generated!
Providing Feedback on AI Teacher Hints
Similar to other AI tools, we are always working to improve our AI features. As a teacher, you have the ability to rate and provide written feedback for each AI suggestion you receive!
Click the thumbs up or thumbs down to rate your suggestion and give feedback in the popup modal.
Managing AI Teacher Hints Settings
AI Teacher Hints settings are found in the AI Hints & Grading settings, which you can reach in two ways:
Open the AI menu in the left-hand navigation bar and choose AI Settings
Click your Profile in the top right, go to Account Settings, and click the AI Settings tab
From there, you can:
Turn AI Teacher Hints on or off using the toggle next to AI Hints
Set your default hint level (General Hint, Identify Problem, or Identify Problem and Offer Solution)
View your AI usage, shown as a progress bar. AI Teacher Hints does not use AI credits and does not have weekly or monthly limits. We have standard rate limiting to avoid abuse.
