The AI Settings app on CodeHS is the single place where teachers control every AI feature on their account. From this one page, you can turn individual AI tools on or off, choose the defaults they use, decide whether Ask AI can reference your students' data, and see how much of your monthly AI usage you've used.

Teachers can access the AI Settings app by opening the AI menu in the left-hand navigation bar and choosing AI Settings.

The AI Settings app is organized into four sections, which can be accessed by the links in the sub-navigation menu on the left side of the page:

Clicking a tool jumps you to that section of the page. Some sections only appear if your account has access to that feature. For example, the Vibe Coding and Ask AI sections are only shown to accounts with those features enabled. Sections your plan doesn't include are shown grayed out with a link to learn more.

This section lets teachers manage AI Hints and AI Grading, including turning each feature on or off and setting the default hint level for students. It also displays a progress bar showing monthly AI usage and the date the allowance resets.

When this setting is on, you can generate an AI hint in the editor's Conversation tab while reviewing a student's code. The hint points out where the student's program can be improved. You choose how much detail the hint gives, edit the draft however you like, and decide whether to send it to the student.

Turning this on adds the option to generate a suggested score and feedback as you move through submissions in the Fast Grade tool. You can accept, edit, or ignore each suggestion before it's saved.

Turning this on adds the option to generate a suggested score and feedback for free response questions in the Gradebook By Assignment view, so you can grade a whole assignment quickly.

This dropdown sets how much detail an AI hint includes by default when you generate one. You can still change the level for any individual hint.

Vibe Coding lets you and your students collaborate with AI to generate and update code right inside the editor. Describe what you want in plain language and the assistant drafts the code. The controls in this section let you choose whether Vibe Coding appears for you and keep an eye on your usage.

Use the Turn on and Turn off button to show or hide the Vibe Code panel in your own view of the editor. This only changes what you see. It does not affect your students.

Set your default options for newly generated AI Creator activities. You can change these settings for any activity before generating it.

Choose the language AI Creator defaults to: JavaScript, Python, Java, HTML, C++, or None for activities that aren't tied to a specific language.

Select the grade levels your generated activities should target, from 4th through 12th grade, or choose All Grades. AI Creator uses this to pitch the reading level and complexity of what it generates.

Set the human language AI Creator writes activities in, so you can generate content for multilingual classrooms.

Choose whether generated notes are created as Markdown or HTML notes.

Turn this on to have Karel appear as a dog instead of the default robot character in generated Karel activities.

Choose whether Ask AI can use student data to provide more tailored responses. You can update this setting anytime.

When this setting is on, Ask AI may reference your students' progress, grades, and how they use CodeHS in order to give you more tailored answers. Turn it off if you'd prefer not to share that information with the assistant. Student data is not sent to external services and is not used to train models. The choice is entirely yours, and you can change it at any time.
