AI Teacher Hints

Learn more about the CodeHS Artificial Intelligence hints for teachers that you can use to provide faster support for your students.

Your district controls this tool.

District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class. Learn more at AI Settings for School and District Administrators.

When you are reviewing student code, you can generate AI Teacher Hints that will point out where the program can be improved. AI Teacher Hints can be accessed directly within the Code Editor via the Conversation Tool.

AI Teacher Hints are only available for teachers to generate. Students do not have the ability to generate AI Teacher Hints or feedback for themselves. If you would like your students to have access to hints, check out this article: Smart Hints.

Using AI Teacher Hints in the Code Editor

  1. When viewing a student's code in the editor, click More > Conversation.

  2. Select the arrow on the right of the blue Generate AI Hint button to choose the type of hint you'd like to create: General Hint, Identify Problem, or Identify Problem and Offer Solution.

  3. Click the Generate AI Hint button to create a draft of the hint text. If you didn't choose a hint type, a General Hint will be generated.

  4. Edit the message.

  5. Once you are happy with the text, click Send to share the hint with the student. These hints will not be shared with students unless the Send button is clicked.

  6. Optional: Give feedback on the hint that was generated!

Providing Feedback on AI Teacher Hints

Similar to other AI tools, we are always working to improve our AI features. As a teacher, you have the ability to rate and provide written feedback for each AI suggestion you receive!

Click the thumbs up or thumbs down to rate your suggestion and give feedback in the popup modal.

Managing AI Teacher Hints Settings

AI Teacher Hints settings are found in the AI Hints & Grading settings, which you can reach in two ways:

  • Open the AI menu in the left-hand navigation bar and choose AI Settings

  • Click your Profile in the top right, go to Account Settings, and click the AI Settings tab

From there, you can:

  • Turn AI Hints on or off using the toggle next to AI Hints

  • Set your default hint level (General Hint, Identify Problem, or Identify Problem and Offer Solution)

  • View your AI usage, shown as a progress bar with the date your monthly allowance resets. For questions about your AI limits, contact your Account Manager directly or email accounts@codehs.com.
