CodeHS is proud to introduce AI Hints to help teachers manage their classrooms and improve student learning outcomes! When you are reviewing student code, you can generate an AI Hint which will point out where the program can be improved. Hints can be accessed within the Code Editor and from the AI Toolbox.

Accessing Your AI Tools

To access the AI Tools:

  1. Join the AI Hints beta by visiting AI Tools.

  2. Review the tool instructions and disclaimers and click Join Beta.

  3. Begin using the AI Hints! After joining the AI Hints beta group, you can join the waitlist to get early access to new and experimental AI Features as they become available!

Using AI Hints in the AI Toolbox

  1. Click Toolbox in the top navigation panel and choose AI Toolbox. You can also visit

  2. Choose Try a Demo Program or Try it With Your Students' Work to view a program.

  3. On the far right, choose which level of hint you would like to create, and choose Generate AI Hint. You can also edit the student code to see how the hint will change!

  4. If you are viewing a student's program, click Send Hint to share the suggestion with students. Students will see the suggestion in the Conversation tab of their Code Editor.

  5. Give feedback on the hint that was generated!

Using AI Hints in the Code Editor

  1. When viewing a student's code in the editor, click More> Conversation.

  2. Choose which level Hint you would like to create and choose Generate Hint.

  3. Edit the message and once you are happy with the text, click Send to share the hint with the students.

  4. Give feedback on the hint that was generated!

AI Settings

Once you have access to the AI tools, you can monitor your usage, opt out of any of the AI features, and set your default hint level using AI Settings.

AI Configuration

You can choose your default AI Hint level:

  1. General Hint: Provide a reminder or general error that will point students in the right direction without giving them the answer.

  2. Identify Problem: Give more information about what exactly is wrong with the student’s code.

  3. Identify Problem and Offer Solution: Give specific details about the issue in the code and how to fix it. Might include code snippets of how the student can change their code.

AI Tool Usage

You can monitor your AI Tools usage from the AI Settings page or from your AI Toolbox. Your use of AI features is limited to 100,000 tokens each month. If you reach your token limit, you will not be able to use AI features until usage resets on the first of the month.

AI Feed

With the AI Feed can view all of the AI hints and grades you've generated as well as all of the AI autograder responses your students have made. You can also give feedback on any of the AI requests from this page.

Providing Feedback on AI Hints

Similar to other AI tools, we are always training and working to improve our AI features. As a teacher, you have the ability to rate and provide written feedback for each AI suggestion you receive!

Click the thumbs up or thumbs down to rate your suggestion and give feedback in the popup modal or return to your AI Feed to provide feedback at a later time.

CodeHS is building other AI tools including AI Grading. After joining the AI Hints beta group, you can join the waitlist to get early access to the new AI Features!
