Using the AI Creator App to Generate AI‑Based Activities

Use AI to generate additional activities that align with state standards or CodeHS Lessons.

District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class. AI Creator Overview

The AI Creator app allows teachers to use AI to develop and assign activities in different programming languages. It provides tools for creating new Assignments that align with state standards and Course Lessons.

AI Creator is powered by AI to help you quickly create customized CodeHS curriculum to improve classroom engagement and differentiation that's personalized to your students' interests and learning needs.

AI Creator is used entirely within the CodeHS platform and is only available to teachers, not students. You control every activity generated in AI Creator — preview and test exercises and then make as many revisions as you like. Students can't access AI Creator activities until you assign them.

You can access the AI Creator app by clicking AI Creator under the "AI" category in the left-hand navigation menu:

Using the AI Creator Tools

AI Creator has five tools which can be accessed at the top of the page: Create, Create from Standard, Create from Lesson, Activities, and Settings:

Create

The Create tool makes it easy to create new learning activities, including:

  • Coding Exercises

  • Quizzes

  • Practice Problems

  • Notes

  • Free Response Prompts

  • Coding Examples

  • Parsons Problems

Follow these steps to create a new activity:

  1. Choose the Activity Type in the first row of options

  2. Specify the activity's Programming Language (Note: Some Programming Languages are unavailable with certain Activity Types)

  3. In the text bubble at the bottom of the page, type a prompt asking the AI to generate an assignment based on the topic of your choice (or choose one of the suggested prompts)

  4. Press Enter or click the Send button to submit your request

Create Content in Other Languages

You can create a new assignment from a preset list of languages using the globe icon in the top right corner:

Provide Feedback to AI Generations

Once your activity is generated, you can use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons to provide feedback on the quality of the response. This helps improve the quality of future generations for your specific needs.

Create from Standard

The Create from Standard tool makes it easy to create an assignment based on a state specific standard or Course standard such as AP Computer Science A and CompTIA A+.

  1. Select the framework using the Framework dropdown menu

  2. Select the specific standard using the Standard dropdown menu

  3. Specify the Assignment type and programming language

Create from Lesson

The Create from Lesson tool allows you to create additional assignments from content within specific CodeHS Lessons.

  1. Select the Section you would like to create the assignment for

  2. Select the Lesson you would like the assignment to reflect

  3. Specify the Assignment type and programming language

Assigning an Activity

  1. Access the Assignment Modal: This modal can be accessed from various points in CodeHS. Here is an article for detailed steps on How to Assign Activities using the Assign Modal.

Previewing an Activity

You can preview the activity by clicking the blue redirect button in the top right corner:

Activities

In the Activities tool, you can see all of your AI creations including the activity type, its programming language, the creation date, and a feature to edit the activity.

You can also view, assign, edit, or delete activities from this page.

Settings

In the Settings tool, you can set the AI Creator to default towards creating assignments in a language, programming language, and one or more grade levels. You can also set default AI Creator settings for each of your Sections.

AI Usage Limits

AI Creator does not use AI credits and does not have weekly or monthly limits. We have standard rate limiting to avoid abuse.
