Your district controls access to AI tools.
District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class. CodeHS AI tools are optional, and most of them are for teachers. Two are student-facing: Smart Hints and Vibe Coding. Each tool below is labeled with who uses it.
Who Controls What
There are two layers of control for AI features.
Your district decides what is allowed. Any CodeHS AI tool can be turned on or off for a whole organization from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. If a tool is off at the district level, no teacher can enable it.
Teachers decide what is used. If AI features are allowed by the district or school, each teacher can switch them on in the AI Settings app. Student tools are turned off by default. A teacher must turn the tool on for a class or for individual students before any student can use it.

AI Grading Rubrics is a teacher tool.
AI Grading Rubrics allow you to create, customize, and test automated grading criteria for any custom assignment. You can edit the rubric and update the solution code, and AI grading can suggest grades for student submissions based on your defined criteria.

Vibe Coding helps students learn to collaborate with AI as they build real HTML programs. Students can practice writing clear, effective prompts, then iterate on the results to refine their ideas, expand their programs, and ask the AI to explain changes so they understand the code behind their creations.

Smart Hints is a student tool.
Smart Hints is a feature within the Code Editor that enables students to receive guidance from an AI assistant while working on assignments. This tool can help support students who are unsure how to approach a problem by offering direction and hints without revealing the solution. Learn More
The Hints App is where teachers can manage and review all Smart Hint activity for your Sections. Control whether students can request hints from AI, monitor how often students are using hints, and review the hints you send to students. Learn More
CodeHS AI Curriculum
Some AI courses run entirely inside CodeHS, and others link to external tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Teachable Machine as part of the lessons. You choose which courses you assign, and we list the requirements for each one. See what tools each course uses.
AI Courses
In this mini course, students will explore the world of Artificial Intelligence by completing ten projects. Students will learn to use AI to generate content, to write effective prompts to generate desired results, and to build their own machine learning model using Teachable Machine. By the end of the course, students will have a more nuanced understanding of the benefits and challenges associated with AI. Also, check out the semester-long version here!
In this course, students will have a chance to explore key aspects of Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, large language models, bias in models, and the impacts they have on our society. Students will have a chance to engage with multiple AI tools throughout the course, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Teachable Machine. Also, check out the month-long version here!
This course is designed to take a look at how data can be used for machine learning to create models for Artificial Intelligence. Students will be using TensorFlow with Python to create neural network models.
In this year-long course, students learn the importance of safeguarding our increasingly digital world and are introduced to the fundamentals of computer programming. Students also examine key ideas in artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, large language models, bias in AI systems, and the impact of AI on society.
Introduction to Vibe Coding - Requires CodeHS Pro
This course introduces students to creating websites using AI. Students first learn the basics of how AI works and how to use it safely before developing their prompting and AI problem-solving skills, then explore digital design and complete customizable web development projects. No prior coding experience or external AI tools necessary.

AI Certifications
This credential assesses foundational knowledge of AI literacy and core AI concepts. By establishing a verified level of expertise, it acts as a strategic catalyst for career growth and reinforces professional authority in the field of artificial intelligence. This exam is not state approved and does not require taking a CodeHS course first. However, we do recommend taking Introduction to AI for High School.
