This article is for teachers using an LMS integration (Canvas, Schoology, Buzz, or Brightspace) whose CodeHS course has already been imported into the LMS. If your school only uses a rostering integration (Clever or ClassLink), you can modify your CodeHS course as usual and no additional steps are needed.
How Your LMS Assignments Connect to CodeHS
When you import a CodeHS course into your LMS, each assignment in the LMS contains an External Tool link that connects it to one specific assignment in your CodeHS course. This link is what allows students to launch assignments and what allows grades to pass back to your LMS gradebook.
⚠️ Every CodeHS course has its own unique assignment IDs. If you create a brand new CodeHS course — even one with the exact same curriculum — the assignment links already in your LMS will not match the new course. This is the most common source of integration issues, so whenever possible, modify your existing CodeHS course instead of creating a new one.
Adding New Assignments to Your Course
1: Add the content to your existing CodeHS course
Use the Course Settings page for your course to add new modules, lessons, or assignments. Make sure you are editing the same CodeHS course you originally imported, not a copy or a new course.
2: Export and import the new content into your LMS
Once the new content is in your CodeHS course, export your course again and import it into your existing LMS course. To avoid creating duplicates of assignments that are already in your LMS, you can import only the new content:

💡 Make sure you publish any newly imported assignments that you want students to access!
Removing or Rearranging Assignments
You can remove or reorder assignments directly in your LMS without affecting your CodeHS course — the content will still exist on CodeHS.
If you remove an assignment from your CodeHS course, be sure to also delete the matching assignment in your LMS. Otherwise, the LMS assignment will contain a link to content that no longer exists in your course, which can cause errors for students.
Switching to a Different CodeHS Course
If you want to use a different CodeHS course with an LMS course that already has CodeHS assignments in it, do not mix assignments from multiple CodeHS courses in the same LMS course. Because each CodeHS course has its own assignment IDs, combining imports from separate courses will cause launch and grade passback issues.
Instead, follow these steps:
1: Build one CodeHS course that contains everything you need
Set up a single CodeHS course that includes all of the content you want to teach. You can customize an existing course or create a new one that combines the content.
2: Remove the old CodeHS assignments from your LMS course
Delete the previously imported CodeHS assignments from your LMS course so old links do not remain alongside the new ones.
3: Reach out to CodeHS Support
Contact support@codehs.com so our team can disconnect your existing CodeHS section from the LMS. This allows a fresh section — linked to your new course — to be created the next time you launch an assignment.
4: Export and import your new course, then launch
Export your new CodeHS course and import it into your LMS course using the instructions linked above. Then click any assignment link from the LMS to launch CodeHS — a new section connected to your new course will be created, and your students will be enrolled when they launch. It may take a few minutes for assignments to load.

A Note on Grade Passback
After making changes, grades will continue to pass back for any assignment whose LMS link matches your CodeHS course. Scores sent to your LMS reflect the actual score in your CodeHS Gradebook, so late deductions, weighted categories, and other Gradebook Settings applied in CodeHS will affect the grade in your LMS. If grades are missing after a course change, reach out to support@codehs.com and we can push them from our end.
