Configuring Gradebook Calculations

Calculate grades based on points earned or points assigned

There are two ways to have grades calculated in the Gradebook:

  • Earned points out of total graded points will calculate each student's grade as the total earned points out of the total points that have been graded. This is the default setting for the gradebook.

  • Earned points out of total possible points will calculate each student's grade as the total earned points out of the total points that have been assigned to the section, even if they haven’t been graded or worked on yet. 

Configuring the Gradebook

To configure how grades are calculated in a section, go to Gradebook and click Configure, then scroll down to the bottom of the pop-up box to update the setting and click Save:

How will updating this setting affect my students' grades?

This gradebook is set to calculate each student's grade as points earned out of points graded:

Since the student has earned 5 points out of 5 graded points, the students grade is 100%.

Since the students has earned 5 points out of 19 assigned points, the students grade is 26.3%.

What is CodeHS' Grade Scale?

We follow the College Board GPA on a 4.0 scale with the below grade percentages.

How Do I Show or Hide Letter Grades?

By default, letter grades are visible to you and your students. To update this setting, go to your Gradebook and click Configure. Scroll to the bottom of the pop-up box and uncheck or check the box labeled Display Letter Grade, then click Save.
