What is a Gradebook Passback Level?

When Exporting your Common Cartridge from CodeHS, teachers will have the option to select which Content they would like to export. This will also determine how CodeHS assignments appear in Canvas and how grades are passed back from CodeHS to Canvas.

Each Content Type determines how CodeHS assignments appear and how the grade is computed in Canvas.

Content Type (Passback Level)

Description

Assignments only

Assign individual activities to your students on Canvas. Each assigned activity will have its own grade in Canvas.

Modules Only

Choosing a Gradebook Passback Level

The main difference between passback levels is the number of assignments that appear in Canvas. Reducing the number of assignments in Canvas can speed up load times within the Canvas platform.

To reduce the number of assignments and gradebook columns in Canvas, you should select either the Lesson or Module Passback Level. If you go with this option, please read the below information on Due Date Passback.

If a single grade for each Activity is needed, you should select the Activity (Assignment) Passback Level.

Due Date Passback

Due Date Passback is available for the Module or Lesson Passback Level.

If Modules Only or Lessons Only is the selected content type when the common cartridge is exported, Due Date Grade Passback is enabled by default. This means that if a due date is set for a Module or Lesson, grades will only be sent after the due date has passed.

Example: If you have Modules Only selected, and Module 1 assigned in CodeHS with a due date set:

  • Before the due date, students will not see a score:

  • After the due date, the grade will update based on completed activities:

If Modules Only or Lessons Only was the selected Content Type when the common cartridge is exported with Due Date Grade Passback disabled, students will receive a grade in Canvas immediately upon completing an activity.

  • Upon Student Submission, students will receive a partial score:

Disabling Due Date Passback

You will be able to turn off Due Date Passback by Navigating to Section Settings and disabling the Due Date Based Grade Passback toggle.
