District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class. Learn more at AI Settings for School and District Administrators.
Overview
Ask AI is your built-in teaching assistant for CodeHop, guided by Scout. Scout is designed to help elementary teachers plan lessons, stay on top of their sections, and get quick answers without leaving CodeHop. Whether you're deciding what to teach next, checking how a course lines up with your state standards, or looking for ways to keep young learners engaged, you can ask Scout in plain language and get help right in the chat.
You can access the Ask AI app from the CodeHop workspace by clicking "Ask AI" in the lefthand navigation menu:
Using the Ask AI App
Start a conversation with Scout
There are two ways to get started. Pick one of the suggested prompts to jump right in, or type your own question in the chat box. The suggested prompts in CodeHop are geared toward elementary classrooms, such as planning a week of coding lessons or seeing how CodeHop courses align to your state standards.
Start a new chat
Select "New Chat" to clear your current chat and start a new conversation.
View previous chats
Your past conversations are saved in the lefthand panel, so you can pick up where you left off. Each one is automatically given a short title based on what you talked about, along with the date it started.
Student Data Settings
To let Scout use your students' data when answering, open the Gear Icon and turn on Include Student Data. Note: CodeHS does not share student data with any third parties.

Explore lessons and courses
Discover CodeHop lessons and courses that fit a topic, grade level, or what you're trying to teach.
Check which courses lineup with your state standards and other supported frameworks.
Get a quick rundown of a course, including the concepts it covers and how it's laid out.
Browse what's available for each grade level.
Find teaching resources
Track down lesson plans, professional development, and other CodeHop materials.
Brainstorm ways to introduce coding to young learners and plan hands-on classroom activities.
Get tips and tools for managing an elementary classroom.
Assign and manage content
Assign lessons to your sections without leaving the chat.
Find extra lessons and activities that build on what your students are already working on.
See what's currently assigned to a section.
Jump straight to a lesson page or another part of CodeHop from the conversation.
Help in the classroom
Answer questions about your sections and what you've assigned.
Suggest extra practice based on what students have already covered.
Point you to CodeHop features and walk you through where to find them.
Look up answers in the CodeHS Knowledge Base when you have a question about the platform.
Review student and classroom data

With this turned on, Scout can pull together a quick picture of how your class is doing, such as:
How individual students are progressing through lessons and sections.
Gradebook performance.
What students have been working on recently.
How a section's activity and progress have trended over time.
Using Personas
Ask AI features personas, which let you focus your conversation on a specific kind of task. Each persona comes with its own set of starter prompts and gives Ask AI some extra context, so you get responses geared toward what you're actually trying to do.
By default, Ask AI runs as General, which can help with anything on CodeHop. But if you already know what kind of help you're after, choosing a persona is a quick way to point it there. You can switch between them anytime by clicking the menu at the bottom-left of the chat box, and selecting a persona.
Here are the personas you can choose from:
General - Anything CodeHop, including courses, assignments, and classroom management.
Co-Teacher - Helps draft emails and prepare materials.
Coach - Helps with teaching tips, tools, and PD best practices.
Data Analyst - Evaluates student progress, grades, and class trends. (Student data insights require Student Data Access)
Librarian - Finds courses, resources, and related materials for students.
Tutor - Helps beginners learn more about coding.
AI Usage Limits
AI usage for the Ask AI app is limited. To see where you stand, hover over the Usage Bar at the top of the page.
