Using Education Savings Account (ESA) Funds for CodeHS

Learn how to use your state's ESA, homeschool scholarship, or education fund to purchase CodeHS computer science courses for at-home learning

Written by Mike Javor

Many states offer Education Savings Account (ESA) programs, homeschool scholarships, or other state education funds that families can use to purchase approved educational products, including CodeHS computer science courses.

What Is an ESA?

An Education Savings Account (ESA) is a state-funded program that gives families a set amount of money each year to spend on approved educational products and services. Each state runs its own program with its own name, eligibility rules, and application process.

Once you have an approved account, use your state's designated marketplace platform to browse and purchase approved educational products.

How ESA Payments Work

  1. Receive state funds. Apply for or receive education funds through your state's ESA or scholarship program. Each state has its own application process and eligibility requirements. Visit your state's program website to get started.

  2. Find CodeHS on your state's marketplace platform. Most states use a payment platform like Odyssey, ClassWallet, or Step Up For Students where you can browse and purchase approved CodeHS courses with state funds.

  3. Start learning. Once your purchase is approved, you'll receive instructions to create or log in to your child's CodeHS account. Your child will have immediate access to their courses and can begin right away.

Using CodeHS for Homeschooling

CodeHS courses are ideal for homeschool learners. Our self-paced, structured curriculum provides a clear, step-by-step path from beginner fundamentals to more advanced topics. No prior coding experience is required.

Every course includes video lessons, hands-on coding exercises, and built-in autograding that gives students instant feedback on their work. All you need is a web browser – no downloads or special software required.

Available courses span beginner through AP level and vary by state — see your state's page below to learn which courses are available in your state’s marketplace platform.
