Enabling Audio Recording for Student Devices

Students can make their own audio recordings to use in their CodeHS programs! Students need to allow CodeHS to access their device's microphone to enable this feature.

  • When opening a program for the first time, students will be prompted to allow CodeHS to access their microphone.

  • Note: selecting "Block" will disable the recording feature.

  • Most browsers remember this answer and won't prompt students again after the first time they open a program.

Troubleshooting with Scratch

If a browser isn't allowed to access the microphone, students will see an error message when trying to record audio:

To allow access to the microphone:

  • Click the microphone icon to the right of the url bar

  • Select "Always Allow" > Click Done

  • Try recording again. You may need to refresh the browser.

Troubleshooting with ScratchJR

If the browser isn't allowed to access the microphone, then the microphone icon will be hidden. Note: the recording icon is usually visible in the green block coding section after selecting a sprite.

To allow access to the microphone:

  • Click the microphone icon to the right of the url bar

  • Select "Always Allow" > Click Done

  • Refresh the browser > then click the Microphone in the green area to record

  • You'll notice the microphone in the url bar is no longer crossed out
