Fast Grade

Fast Grade allows you to quickly grade student submissions

Fast Grade is a CodeHS Pro tool designed to make grading student submissions on CodeHS quick and easy.

Main Features:

  • Get access to all the information that you need to know about the submission you are grading.

  • Assign a grade with a single click.

  • Suggest grades and feedback using AI.

  • Send new messages to students and review previous messages sent to students.

  • Compare the student’s code to the assignment's solution code.

  • Filter for the submissions that you need to grade. You can filter submissions by Assignment, Section, and Progress.

Accessing Fast Grade

From the Left-hand Navigation Menu

Under the Grading category, click on Fast Grade:

From the Code Review App

Click on Code Review in the left-hand navigation menu under the Grading category. In the Overview tool, you can find the Fast Grade button towards the top:

Awarding Grades in Fast Grade

There are six buttons used for grading in Fast Grade: Award Full Credit, Give Zero, Suggest Grade, Generate AI Responses, Finalize, Needs Work. Once you give a student a grade, the next submission will automatically appear.

  • Award Full Credit: Gives the submission a full score and automatically marks it as finalized without needing to enter a score.

  • Give Zero: Gives the submission a score of 0 and automatically marks it as finalized without needing to enter a score.

  • Suggest Grade: Uses AI to analyze the student’s code against the assignment’s criteria, then proposes a score.

  • Generate AI Response: Uses AI to analyze the student’s submission and generate helpful, constructive comments

  • Finalize: Uses the manually entered score or AI-suggested grade and marks the submission as finalized.

  • Needs Work: Uses the manually entered score or AI-suggested grade and marks the submission as needs work.

Skip and Back Buttons

Next to the assignment name, click the left arrow to return to the previous submission. Click the Skip button to skip the current displayed submission.

Grading by Assignment for a Particular Section

With Fast Grade, you can grade all submissions for a particular section and assignment.

  1. Navigate to the Gradebook and select the section you'd like to grade.

  2. Click on the assignment you want to grade and select Fast Grade.

  3. You can now grade all submissions for one particular assignment at a time.

Applying filters to the Fast Grade

You can filter by Section, Assignment Name, Status, or Order in Fast Grade mode.

To filter by Courses, Sections, and Assignments:

  1. Select a section using the Section dropdown, or select the Course title will auto-select all sections for the course.

  2. Use the checkbox to select assignments by Module, Lesson, and Assignment level, and click Done.

Applying Status, Order, and Show Gradebook Assignments filters:

  1. Use the Status dropdown to select (can multiselect) assignments in Unopened, Not Submitted, Submitted, Reviewed, Submitted After Review, and Finalized status.

  2. Use the Order dropdown to sort assignments by Default order, Oldest submissions first, Newest submissions first, Last name A-Z, and Last name Z-A.

  3. Show Gradebook assignments only: allows you to restrict the assignments you are viewing and grading to only those that are currently configured to appear in your Gradebook

Don’t forget to click the green Apply button to apply the changes!

Removing Filters from the Fast Grade

You can remove filters from Fast Grade in a few different ways.

Clicking the Clear button deselects all of the filters that were previously selected:

Clicking on an already selected (checked) Course's title or Section's title will remove all of the corresponding assignments from the Fast Grade queue:

Clicking on an already selected (has check) Module, Lesson, or Assignment will remove all of the corresponding assignments from the Fast Grade queue:

Alternatively, you can click on the "X" at the end of each Assignment pill to deselect the assignment filter.

Don’t forget to click the green Apply button when you’re done with your selection!

Keyboard Shortcuts in Fast Grade

You can also use keyboard shortcuts to make the grading process even faster. Keyboard shortcuts can be found on the "?" icon on the right-hand side of the platform.
