There are two ways to have grades calculated in the Gradebook app:

  • Earned points out of total graded points will calculate each student's grade as the total earned points out of the total points that have been graded. This is the default setting for the Gradebook.

  • Earned points out of total possible points will calculate each student's grade as the total earned points out of the total points that have been assigned to the section, even if they haven’t been graded or worked on yet.

Configuring the Gradebook

To configure how grades are calculated in a section, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Gradebook app

  2. Click on the Settings tab in the top navigation bar

  3. Then, scroll down to the Grade Calculations section to configure the grading calculation settings

  4. Click Save

How will updating this setting affect my students' grades?

This Gradebook is set to calculate each student's grade as points earned out of points graded:

Since the student has earned 5 points out of 5 graded points, the student's grade is 100%.

This Gradebook is set to calculate each student's grade as points earned out of points assigned:

Since the student has earned 5 points out of 19 assigned points, the student's grade is 26.3%.
