AI Settings for School and District Administrators

See and control which CodeHS Artificial Intelligence tools your teachers and students can use, from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard

Written by Mike Javor

Districts control access to AI tools.

District and school admins can turn any CodeHS AI tool on or off from the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard. Student-facing AI tools also stay off by default until a teacher enables them for a class.

This is a Pro Feature

CodeHS AI tools are optional. Your district decides which ones are available, and that decision applies to every teacher and student in your organization.

Two Layers of Control

Your district decides what is allowed.

Any CodeHS AI tool can be turned on or off for your whole organization from the Administrator Dashboard's AI Policies page. If a tool is turned off at the district level, no teacher in your district can enable it.

Teachers decide what is used.

For the two student-facing tools — Smart Hints and Vibe Coding — a teacher must also turn the tool on for a class, or for individual students, before any student can use it. District approval alone does not put an AI tool in front of a student.

Teacher tools require only the first layer. Student tools require both.

Finding Your AI Policies Page

  1. Go to your Administrator Dashboard

  2. In the left sidebar, select AI Policies

  3. Each tool has its own switch. Changes save immediately and apply across your organization.

AI Policies page

Every row shows who the tool affects and what it does. Select the ? next to any tool for more detail.

AI Policies settings are only available for administrators. If you do not have administrator access and believe you should, please contact your Account Manager or accounts@codehs.com.

What Each AI Tool Does

Teacher tools

Tool

What it does

Ask AI

An AI assistant teachers use to ask questions about their courses, sections, and student work.

AI Creator

Teachers generate assignments, quizzes, and practice problems, then review and edit them before students see them.

AI Creator is a separate add-on.

AI Grading

Suggests grades and written feedback based on a rubric. The teacher reviews and can accept, edit, or reject every suggestion before it reaches a student.

AI Teacher Hints

Teachers generate a hint for a student's code and choose how much to reveal. The teacher reviews the hint before sending it.

Vibe Coding

Vibe Coding exercises allow collaboration with an AI agent to generate and refine program code. Teachers can create Vibe Coding programs, assign Vibe Coding exercises to their students, review students' conversation activity, and control students' access to Vibe Coding tools.

Student tools

Tool

What it does

Smart Hints

Students request a hint on their own code from a set of fixed prompts. Hints guide toward the next step and never give the answer. There is no open chat. Students have a five-message daily limit, and teachers can review every hint a student received.

Vibe Coding

Students collaborate with an AI assistant to build and refine programs by describing what they want. The assistant is restricted to coding topics and declines anything off-topic. Teachers can review every conversation.

How Vibe Coding AI Policies Controls Work Together

The AI Policies page's Vibe Coding switch is the parent setting that controls whether Vibe Coding is available to teachers and students. The Vibe Coding - Student switch controls student access to Vibe Coding.

To allow teachers to build with Vibe Coding while keeping it away from students, leave Vibe Coding on and turn off Vibe Coding - Student.

Turning Vibe Coding off turns off Vibe Coding access for both teachers and students.

Disabling All AI Tools

The "or turn everything off" switch at the bottom of the AI Policies page disables every CodeHS AI tool for your organization, regardless of the individual tool settings. A CodeHS classroom with zero AI enabled is fully supported — the curriculum, IDE, grading, and reporting all work exactly the same.

District and School Settings

School settings sync with the district by default, so a district-level policy applies to every school under it. To set a different policy for one school, contact support@codehs.com for assistance.

What Teachers Control

Allowing a tool makes it available. Teachers still choose whether to use it:

  • Smart Hints is enabled per section or per student in the Smart Hints app, where teachers also review all student hint usage.

  • Vibe Coding is enabled per section or per student in Student Settings.

  • Teacher tools are switched on and off by each teacher in their own AI Settings app.

Don't See the AI Policies Page?

Access to the AI Policies page is set per organization. If you're an administrator and it isn't in your sidebar, email support@codehs.com or contact your Account Manager at accounts@codehs.com and we'll enable it.

We can also apply an AI policy for you if you'd rather send it to us in writing.
