The Hints App on CodeHS is the app where you can manage and review all Smart Hint activity for your sections. You can control whether students can request Smart Hints, monitor how students are using those hints, and review the AI Teacher Hints you've generated and sent to students yourself.

Smart Hints is powered by AI so it can respond to the specific code a student has written, rather than giving every student the same generic troubleshooting message.

It's intentionally designed with limits for students: there’s no open-ended chat, students choose from four preset prompts, hints point toward the next step instead of giving the answer, and students can receive up to five hints per day. Teachers can review both the prompt a student selected and the hint they received.

District administrators can also control whether Smart Hints is available through the AI Policies page in the Administrator Dashboard, and teachers can enable or disable it by section or individual student.

To access this app, look under AI category in the left-hand nav, then click Hints.

The Hints app features 4 tools that can be accessed by the tabs at the top of the page: Smart Hints Student Usage, Smart Hints Insights, Smart Hints Settings, and Teacher Hints Log.

Smart Hints Student Usage shows you how students are using Smart Hints. You can view how often students are using hints, if students are relying heavily on hints, if multiple students or a particular student may be stuck on a specific assignment, etc.

You are also able to view each hint a student requested and the response they received. Learn more about: Monitoring Smart Hints

The Insights tool provides high-level analytics and data visualization on how Smart Hints is being utilized across your Sections. Along with top-level engagement metrics, detailed breakdowns like Messages per student, Most-asked-about assignments, and All assignments help you spot where students need support.

This tool controls whether students in a Section can request Smart Hints while working in the Code Editor. Smart Hints is off by default — you must enable it here before students can use it. Learn more about Smart Hints.

The Teacher Hints Log gives you a record of the AI Teacher Hints that teachers have generated and sent to students from the Code Editor. Use it to review all AI-generated feedback that was sent to students, as well as direct links to the assignment for which the hint was generated. Learn more about AI Teacher Hints.
