Purchasing CodeHS Courses with Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) Funds

Learn how Texas homeschool families can use TEFA funds to purchase TEKS-aligned CodeHS computer science courses through the Odyssey marketplace

Written by Mike Javor

Starting July 2026, Texas homeschool families can use their Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) funds to purchase CodeHS computer science courses for at-home learning. CodeHS offers courses from middle school through AP levels—including courses with 100% Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards alignment—that are self-paced, and web-based with no downloads or installation required. CodeHS is an approved vendor on the Odyssey marketplace, where all TEFA purchases are made.

What Is TEFA?

In May 2025, Senate Bill 2 established the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program that provides Texas families with funds to customize their child's education. Starting July 2026, homeschool families can receive $2,000 per student per year to spend on approved educational products and services, administered through the Odyssey marketplace.

Who Is Eligible for TEFA Funds?

To be eligible for TEFA funds, your child must be eligible to attend a Texas school program and have a parent who is a Texas resident.

When Will TEFA Funds Be Available?

Awarded students will receive TEFA funds July 1, 2026.

Each CodeHS course purchase provides access for the full school year, so your child has plenty of time to work through the curriculum at their own pace.

How to Purchase CodeHS Courses with TEFA Funds

  1. Get approved for TEFA. Visit educationfreedom.texas.gov to submit your application. You'll need to verify Texas residency, income, and U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. Applications are reviewed on an annual basis, and you'll be notified once your account is approved and funded.

  2. Browse CodeHS courses. Explore the TEFA-eligible course catalog to find the right fit for your child's grade level and interests.

  3. Purchase through Odyssey. Log in to withodyssey.com with your TEFA account, search for CodeHS, select your course, and complete the purchase using your TEFA balance.

  4. Start learning. After your purchase is confirmed, you'll receive instructions to set up your child's CodeHS account.

Getting Support

CodeHS courses are designed to be self-guided. Every course walks your child through each concept with video lessons, step-by-step coding exercises, and instant autograded feedback, so they can learn and complete the work independently, with no teaching or coding background needed on your part.

Because these courses are self-paced and self-serve, CodeHS doesn't provide one-on-one tutoring or individualized coding or curriculum help for TEFA purchases. The course itself is built to give your child everything they need to make progress.

For questions about your TEFA account, course purchasing, or technical issues with the CodeHS platform, contact Odyssey support directly.
