LTI 1.3 For Teachers: How to Change the Gradebook Passback Level for a Canvas-Linked Section in CodeHS

This guide walks you through how to change the gradebook passback level (Module, Lesson, or Activity) for a Canvas-linked section in CodeHS.

Written by Mac Staloch

⚠️ If possible, the simplest and cleanest approach is to reset your Canvas course content and then re-export the Common Cartridge from CodeHS and import it into the reset Canvas shell.

  • This option may require assistance from a Canvas Administrator.

  • Resetting the course avoids the need to manually delete assignment groups and ensures a smoother transition when changing the gradebook passback level.

If resetting your Canvas course is not an option, you can follow the step-by-step instructions below to manually update the gradebook passback level.

⚠️ Important: Before you begin, you must contact CodeHS Support (support@codehs.com) or your Customer Success Manager. There are required configuration steps on the CodeHS side, and the process will not work correctly without their assistance.

Step 1: Check Your Current Gradebook Passback Level

  1. Go to the Sections app in CodeHS.

  2. Click the Settings tab

  3. Ensure the appropriate Section is selected in the Dropdown

  4. Scroll down to Grade Passback Level.

You will see one of three options:

  • Module

  • Lesson

  • Activity

This indicates how grades are currently being passed back to Canvas.

Step 2: Prepare Canvas by Removing Existing CodeHS Assignments

To change the gradebook passback level, you must first remove existing CodeHS assignments from Canvas.

Delete CodeHS Assignments

  1. In Canvas, open your course.

  2. Click Assignments.

  3. Find the assignment group containing CodeHS assignments (for example, Imported Assignments).

  4. Click the three dots next to the group and select Delete.

  5. Confirm by clicking Delete Group.

If Canvas Will Not Let You Delete All Assignments

If your course contains only CodeHS assignments, Canvas may block deletion. To resolve this:

  1. Create a new assignment group (for example, name it “Assignments”).

  2. Once the new group exists, delete the original CodeHS assignment group.

Your Canvas course should now be blank with no CodeHS assignments.

Step 3: Export a New Common Cartridge from CodeHS

  1. In CodeHS, go to Courses.

  2. Identify the course your section is tied to.

  3. Click the gear icon to open Course Settings.

  4. Click Export next to Export to Common Cartridge.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Choose your Gradebook Passback Level:

    • Ex. For activity-level passback, select Assignments Only.

  7. Click Continue.

  8. Select Canvas as your LMS and click Export.

This will download a new Common Cartridge file.

Step 4: Import the Common Cartridge into Canvas

  1. In Canvas, go to your course Home page.

  2. Click Import Existing Content.

  3. Select Common Cartridge.

  4. Upload the file you just downloaded from CodeHS.

  5. Click Add to Import Queue.

Once complete, go to Assignments in Canvas and confirm you can see the new Content.

Not seeing any new content after importing?
