Chromebook Cleanup Checklist

Use this guide to check your Chromebook’s storage space and memory (RAM) when students are getting a “this page is unresponsive” message in the browser.

Check Storage Space

  1. Click the time in the bottom-right.

  2. Select the Settings gear.

  3. Go to Device > Storage management.

  4. Review how space is used (apps, downloads, system files).

Free Up Storage

  • Delete downloads: Open the Files app → Downloads, delete what you don’t need, or move to Google Drive.

  • Uninstall apps/extensions you don’t use: Right-click an app → Uninstall.

  • Manage offline files: In the Files app → Google Drive, right-click files and turn off Available offline if not needed.

Check Memory (RAM)

  1. Press Search + Esc to open Task Manager.

  2. Look at the Memory footprint column to see what’s using the most RAM.

Free Up Memory

  • Close tabs & apps: Highlight them in Task Manager → End process.

  • Remove/disable extensions: Type chrome://extensions/ in the address bar, turn off ones you don’t use.

  • Run fewer apps: Keep only what you need open.
